WEEK
ZERO IN THE BOOKS
MORE
Permian ushered in 2007
on Thursday night in grand style.
The Panthers drew immediate blood on
the first possession. Quarterback Taylor Byrd took a quarterback
sneak into the end zone for their first of three scores in the first
quarter. The Panthers added another three scores in the second
quarter, expanding the score to 41-0. The Mojo defense limited
Lubbock High to only four first downs in the half. District 3-5A
continued to flex its muscle Friday night as Midland Lee (23-0), Odessa
High (41-6), and Abilene Cooper (21-6) collected lopsided victories.
The district split the Saturday doubleheader when Midland High lost 40-7
and Abilene High won 31-10.
DISTRICT
FULL OF HOPEFULS
DISTRICT PREVIEW
West Texas and the Little
Southwest Conference will kickoff another action packed season of
smash-mouth football this week. Early favorites look to be Odessa Permian
and Abilene High (last year’s champion of District 3-5A). Midland Lee and
Abilene Cooper look solid to reach post-season play, as well. Odessa
High has offensive strength and Midland High looks solid defensively.
Both have holes to fill on the opposite sides of the ball.
Unlike recent years,
District 3-5A in 2007 will reclaim the title of being one of the state’s
toughest districts. There are simply no slouches in this district
this season. You could pick any four teams from district and
expect bi-district wins from them come November, if given the chance.
SUPER
BOWL SHINING
MORE
Former
Cooper Cougar Dominic Rhodes shined in Super Bowl XLI and led the
Indianapolis Colts to a 29-17 victory. The 1998 Cooper graduate rushed
for 113 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown against the Chicago
Bears. He also caught an eight yard pass from Peyton Manning.
Justin Snow, another Cooper graduate, plays for the Colts as a tight end.
Congrats to the Colts and their NFL champions title.
REALIGNMENT FOR 2006-08
Reclassification and realignment information for 2006-08 was
released on Thursday.
The information was distributed to school superintendents. The 'Little Southwest Conference' stayed intact
for another two years.
Beginning practice dates will remain the same
for all conferences. Schools continue to be limited to no more than ten
regular season games.
