MANSFIELD AT ODESSA PERMIAN
HIGHLIGHT AND SUMMARY
The Mojo Machine continues to gain Mojomentum
as Permian destroyed the Mansfield Tigers 60-21 in Brownwood's Gordon
Wood Stadium. The 60-point total was one shy of the school's
playoff record. Mojo scored on eight of 10 offensive series and
did not have to punt all day. Of the two scoreless possessions,
one ended in a missed field goal and the other was on the Mansfield
1-yard line when the game ended.
Taylor Byrd passed for 239 yards and two
touchdowns and ran for two more scores. Jamison Berryhill also had two
rushing TDs, while Esai Sotelo, who led the Panthers ground game with 78
yards on nine carries, also ran for a TD. Berryhill finished with
67 yards on 10 carries.
After taking a 33-7 halftime lead, Byrd (who was 19-of-23 passing)
laid out picturesque passes to Melvis Pride for a 23-yard TD and Shai
Biggerstaff for a 23-yard score. Trevor Adams, who was 6-of-8 for 101
yards, hit Joseph Knighten for a 45-yard TD to end the third quarter.
Permian’s 346 passing yards was just three
shy of the single-game record set last season against Amarillo Tascosa.
The Panthers added 231 yards rushing. The Mojo Machine will host
El Paso Montwood at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ratliff Stadium in the Area Round
of the Class 5A Division I state playoffs. Montwood advanced by
beating San Angelo Central 28-24 on Friday.

AT MANSFIELD SUMMIT
GAME
PHOTOS
Lee's Corey Petro and Josey Childs scored two touchdowns
each, and the Rebel defense held Mansfield Summit to 227 total yards in
the 28-7 Bi-District victory.
Lee's defense was clearly
the story of this game. The Rebels held the Jaguars rushing attack
that had been averaging close to 350 yards per game to 106.
Summit's only touchdown came on a fumble return on the second play of
the game.
The Rebels scored one
touchdown in every quarter. Jace Edwards led the Rebels on an
8-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a Petro 1-yard TD run. Petro
scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Childs scored on
1-yard dives in the second and third quarters. Petro finished with
135 yards on 24 carries, and Edwards completed 8 of 11 passes for 82
yards. Lee will face Lubbock Coronado on Friday at Lowrey Field in
Lubbock.
WEATHERFORD AT ABILENE HIGH
The Eagles' defense pitched a shutout through three
quarters in a 48-14 rocking of Weatherford at Shotwell Stadium.
The defense held the Kangaroos to just one big play in the third
quarter, a 46-yard run by Mitchael Rucker, and virtually nothing else
until the fourth quarter when the Eagles led 48-0.
Leading 21-0, the AHS
offense got into the act in the third quarter. Ben Wadsworth
scored on a 40-yard pass play from quarterback Spens Lackey and then the
ground attack took over. Keithy Flye, who rushed 20 times for 143 yards,
scored on a 13-yard run. Zach Bass scored on runs of 26 and 2 yards as
the Eagles took a 48-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Weatherford finally got
on the scoreboard twice in the fourth quarter after the AHS starters had
called it a night. A pass interception and 21-yard return gave the 'Roos
good field position at the AHS 34. Seven plays later, Mitchael Rucker
scored from the 6. After a short punt, Weatherford took four plays
to go 38 yards. Rucker connected with Dakota Abernathy for a 16-yard
scoring play.
ABILENE
COOPER AT MANSFIELD TIMBERVIEW
As had been the case throughout the season, penalties
and turnovers hurt the Cougars in their 17-13 loss to Mansfield
Timberview. Cooper lost two fumbles in the red zone to start the
second half and never seemed to recover.
It was obvious from the
beginning that the game was going to turn into a slugfest as both teams
were running the ball well. Timberview struck first when junior
running back Eric Stevens scampered in from 26 yards out for the first
of his two touchdowns in the game. Stevens finished the game with 69
yards on 14 carries.
Cooper answered on its
next possession with its only touchdown of the game when Will Casey hit
Timmy Dixon from 27 yards out. Cooper took its only lead of the
day at 10-7 when kicker Isaac Escobedo connected from 31 yards out with
6:18 left in the first half. Timberview' successful ground game
resulted in Stevens' second touchdown of the game and gave Timberview a
14-10 lead. Cooper answered with another field goal but was unable
to muster much more offense the rest of the way.
