ODESSA
PERMIAN @ ABILENE COOPER
SUMMARY & STATS
The Permian defense dominated Cooper and held them to 186 total yards in
the 40-14 shellacking in Shotwell Stadium. The Cougars had a
negative 13 yards rushing with six sacks, the first of which resulted in
a safety for the game’s first score. The Panthers also shut down
CHS running back A’mon Pimpton, who entered the game as the leading
rusher in 3-5A. Pimpton finished with 6 yards on 10 carries and
lost a fumble.
Permian racked up 412 yards of their own behind the running and passing
of quarterback Taylor Byrd. The senior gave the Panthers a
100-yard rusher for the second straight week, gaining 108 and scoring
three touchdowns on 12 carries. He was 9-of-20 passing for 149 yards.
Jamison Berryhill added 73 yards rushing with touchdowns of 17 and 15
yards on nine carries, while Joseph Knighten had four receptions for 75
yards. Michael McNatt added a 25-yard field goal in the third
quarter for Permian.
Cooper quarterback Will Casey, the
district’s leading passer, was 19-of-30 passing for 166 yards, but it
was receiver Ricky Stevenson’s passing that got the Cougars on the
board. Stevenson, who had eight catches for 70 yards, hit Timmy Dixon
for a 33-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter after Permian opened
up a 33-0 lead. Pimpton added a 5-yard scoring run with 4:08 remaining.

HIGH AT MIDLAND LEE
GAME PHOTOS
Abilene High built a 30-6
first-half lead, starting five of their seven first-half drives outside
their 40 yard line and twice started inside the Rebels' 15. The
Lee defense gave a valiant effort - just spent too much time on the
field in the 37-13 loss to the Eagles.
Using a
two-quarterback system, Lee only reached Abilene High territory
four times. Two of those possessions resulted in turnovers on
downs and the other two resulted in the Rebels' scores.
Abilene High's offense scored on six of their seven first-half
possessions (three touchdowns and three field goals).
Senior quarterback Spens
Lackey, who went 10-of-12 for 111 yards and a touchdown. Keithy
Flye netting all 97 of his yards, including a 53-yard touchdown run, in
the first two quarters before being held out of the second half with a
sore groin. The Eagles will host Permian in Shotwell on October 26
in a game that will probably crown the district champions.
MIDLAND
HIGH @ ODESSA HIGH
Twice the Bulldogs drove the ball inside the Odessa High 10-yard line
and didn't have a single point to show for it in the 15-14 loss to the
Bronchos in Ratliff Stadium.
The Bulldogs came out of
the locker room with a 14-12 halftime lead and looked ready to take control
of the game. Midland High took the second half kickoff and marched down
to the Odessa High 8 where it had first and goal. However, an
incompletion, a two-yard loss by Darius Miller and a delay of game
penalty pushed the Bulldogs back to a third-and-goal from the OHS 15,
where quarterback Chase Plourd was sacked for a 10-yard loss.
Odessa High then took
over and moved down the field, but eventually was forced into a
third-and-30 at Midland High's 37. Travis Austin nailed a 37-yarder for
his third successful kick of the game, which proved to be the
game-winning points. MHS got the ball back one more time with 1:35
left, but with no timeouts. The Bulldogs got no further than
Odessa High's 45 as a desperation pass fell short.
