LUBBOCK
MONTEREY @ ODESSA PERMIAN
GAME SUMMARY & STATS
Permian rushed for 336 yards and for the first time this season did not
have a touchdown pass. The Panthers still clobbered the Plainsmen 44-7
and improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1995.
Esai Sotelo had 99 rushing yards on 16
carries, while Sherard Ray had 90-yards on eight carries. Each
scored a touchdown. Jamison Berryhill added 71 yards and a touchdown and
quarterback Taylor Byrd ran for 60 yards and two TDs.
The Permian defense turned in another solid performance, limiting the
Plainsmen to 211 of total offense. Monterey quarterback John Paul Floyd
threw for 129 yards and a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Floyd’s last
two passes were intercepted, with Andrew Amoyaw returning it 23 yards
for the game’s final touchdown.
DENTON
RYAN AT ABILENE HIGH
Abilene scored on its first three drives to
put Denton Ryan behind from the very start of the Eagles' 49-41
Homecoming victory. Spens Lackey orchestrated a 97-yard drive and
a 90-yard drive on the first two, with Lackey running one in and
throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Keithy Flye for the second.
Both passing
games lit up the scoreboard. Ryan quarterback Austin Axtell threw for
443 yards and five touchdowns, while Lackey threw for 244 and three
touchdowns. The Eagles enjoyed a 28-13 halftime lead at the break.
The Raiders spent most of the second half trying
to keep the game within one score, but every
time they scored to get it to an eight-point
deficit, the Eagles would answer. The teams
combined for five fourth quarter touchdowns,
including three by the Raiders. With 1:39
left to play and trailing 49-41, the Raiders
didn’t have much of a chance on an onside kick
attempt and Abilene was able to milk the clock
for the win.
ABILENE
COOPER AT LUBBOCK CORONADO
Turnovers will cost you the game. The Cougars found out first hand
as they suffered a 31-14 loss to the Mustangs. Cooper commited two
interceptions, one fumble, two muffed punts, a blocked punt and 10
penalties.
A muffed punt by Will
Ford at the Cooper 30 set up Coronado's first score in the second
quarter. On the ensuing possession, a backward pass from Casey to
Kenyon Barnes was dropped and recovered by Matt Hasley at the Cougar 12.
Coronado took advantage of the mistake with a 23-yard field goal by
Lukas Rutter.
The blunders continued to
haunt the Cougars in the second half, beginning with a blocked punt by
Aaron Cude on Cooper's second possession. Bo Campbell scooped up the
loose ball, and raced 34 yards to give the Mustangs a 17-7 lead.
Lance Quigley snagged a pass intended for Steven Snyder and raced
untouched for 89-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth.
Coronado's final score courtesy of a muffed punt at the Cooper 28. Of
Coronado's five scores, all five followed a Cooper mistake.
AMARILLO
HIGH AT MIDLAND HIGH
The story for the Bulldogs continues to be strong defense and
an emerging passing game with Chase Plourd at quarterback. Plourd
completed 21-of-36 passes for 284 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the
20-0 Homecoming triumph.
Midland High mounted the
first serious drive of the game, going 73 yards on five plays, as Plourd
completed all four of his passes for 71 yards. Three of those throws
went to sophomore Antwan Goodley, the last of which was a 22-yard
scoring pass which made it 7-0. The rest of the work was done by the
Midland High defense. The Bulldogs allowed only 57 Amarillo yards
on the ground and only 168 yards of total offense.
ODESSA
HIGH AT SAN ANGELO CENTRAL
The Bronchos didn't get on the scoreboard until the final play of the
first half on a Travis Austin 48-yard field goal. Unfortunately
for Odessa High, the Bobcats put up 20 points in the 20-5 loss to San
Angelo Central.
Just one week after
gaining nearly 500 yards in offense, OHS could manage only 179.
Running back J.J. Hill was the workhorse, finishing with 57 yards on 14
carries. Central quarterback Anthony Castillo, who rushed 20 times for
62 yards, including several big plays to extend drives. He also was
9-of-18 for 89 yards passing, with one touchdown.
MESQUITE
AT MIDLAND LEE
The
Rebels traveled to Abilene to host the Mesquite Skeeters in the
district's lone Saturday game. The
defense showed up and kept Kelly Page and Adrian Richards in check.
The Lee offense failed to get rolling in the 10-0 loss in Shotwell
Stadium.
Neither team scored in the first quarter. As the
game approached halftime, Mesquite navigated a drive capped off with a
11-yard TD pass from Page to Richards. On the ensuing kickoff, the Skeeters recovered an onside kick and two plays later would kick a
46-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead. Neither team could score
in the second half.
