MHS BREAKS IN NEW STADIUM WITH 35-7 WIN

AUGUST 31, 2002
MIDLAND, TX -- Playing their first game in the Grande Communications Stadium, the Bulldogs made their debut in style.  Midland High, under new coach Craig Yenzer, dominated defensively and offensively in the pounding of Lubbock Coronado, 35-7.

The Bulldogs got all the scores they needed in the first half, taking a 21-7 lead highlighted by two long touchdown passes from Ryan Rowland. They put the game away in the second half by simply holding on to the ball and not letting go, controlling the ball 11 of the 12 minutes in the third quarter.  All Coronado could manage against the MHS defense was three series in which the Mustangs went three-and-out each time.

The Bulldogs scored the first points in the history of the stadium as Rowland rolled out of the pocket and hit Zack Sledge for a 46-yard scoring pass which gave MHS a 7-0 lead.  On its next possession, Phillip Mancha returned a short kick 26 yards deep into Coronado territory, and on the next play, T.J. Barber scored from five yards out to make it 13-0.  The Mustangs took advantage of good field position and scored on a 6-yard pass from Bryan Keefner to Vincent Briggs to cut the deficit to 13-7 in the second quarter.  Three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Rowland hit Trevor Forbes on a 70-yard score which made it 21-7 after a two-point conversion run by Mancha.

The Bulldogs had a balanced night offensively, passing for 169 yards and running for 165.  The Bulldog defense held the Mustangs to five first downs, 41 yards rushing, and 47 yards passing.
