MHS COACH STILL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

AUGUST 25, 2002
MIDLAND, TX -- Midland High travels to Van Horn for an 11:00am scrimmage against El Paso Hanks, the last chance the Bulldogs will have to see what they can do under game conditions before beginning their season. Next Friday at 7:30pm, the Bulldogs will open the brand new Scharbauer Sports Complex against Lubbock Coronado, who travel to Ratliff Stadium in Odessa this weekend.  Yenzer and his staff installed their system beginning with spring sessions in April, and this will be the final dress rehearsal before the Bulldogs do it for real next week.  This is also the final opportunity for players to show that they belong, if they are in a situation where a starting spot or even a mere roster spot is in question.  Practices can only provide so much incentive to perform before the players try to find out what they can do against opponents.  While Yenzer says he doesn't know a lot about Hanks, the opponent is only secondary to the task at hand. With playing time at stake, the coaches want to see as many players as possible on the field in simulated game situations.  Ryan Rowland, who started every game at quarterback last season, and Jason Russell, both seniors, will both run plays with the first unit according to Yenzer.

Results from the scrimmage
Bulldogs dominated on both sides of the ball, scoring nine touchdowns to one for Hanks on a day which appeared to have nothing but upsides for most involved.  It might not be an accurate gauge of where the Bulldogs stand, since they were far bigger than Hanks and faster at most positions, as well.  The Bulldogs figured to be strong and lived up to expectations. The first team defense didn't allow Hanks to score and held Hanks to no yards on the ground.

MHS - Ryan Rowland 4 run
MHS - Jason Russell 41 run
MHS - T.J. Barber 9 pass from Russell
EPH - Paul Gutierrez 16 pass from Ron Morales
MHS - Mike Smith 63 run
MHS - Zack Sledge 4 pas from Rowland
MHS - Jordan 14 pass from Russell
MHS - Eric Paulson 7 run

Game Condition Scoring
