GRAND PRAIRIE,
TX
— Cooper's Mark Trevino nailed a 23-yard
field goal with just 52 seconds to ice the game for the Cougars over
Grand Prairie, 23-20 at the Gopher Bowl.Trevino’s
field goal was set up with a 13-play drive that began at Cooper’s
37-yard line with 7:37 left in the game.
Trevino’s game winner extended Cooper’s
win streak to two games, both of which came over highly regarded
Dallas-area teams. The Cougars opened the season with a 40-7 win
over Duncanville last week. Cooper’s night got off to a
disastrous start when Grand Prairie scored 14 points in the first 43
seconds of the game. The Gophers scored on their first offensive
play when quarterback Rhett Bomar threw a swing pass to wide receiver
Devin Lowery, who scampered 77 yards for a touchdown.
What started out bad got even worse for
Cooper when Galusha fumbled the snap on Cooper’s first play of the
game and Grand Prairie linebacker Casey Stafford recovered the ball at
Cooper’s 21-yard line. Grand Prairie scored on the next play on a
21-yard run by Bomar to give the Gophers a 14-0 lead with less than a
minute gone in the game. Cooper fought back by scoring 17
unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead at halftime, including Trevino
kicking a 40-yard field goal with nine second left in the half.
Cooper regained the lead early in the
fourth quarter when Trevino kicked a 33-yard field goal to give the
Cougars a 20-17 advantage. Grand Prairie came back to tie the game at
20-20 on a 26-yard field goal. Trevino ended the second half the
same way he did the first - adding three points to break a tie.
