Week Three began with a Cougar victory on
Thursday and ended with a Rebel dominance on Saturday. That's
a much better showing for District 3-5A than the previous week,
where all but one team (Midland High) were handed losses.
Three of the district teams entertained homecoming festivities.
Midland Lee and Odessa Permian made the most of theirs, while
Midland High's wasn't near as pleasant.
Abilene Cooper - San Angelo Central
Field goals, defense, and a strong second half showing catapulted the
Cooper Cougars to a 28-10 victory over San Angelo Central. JoJo Jones finished with 76 yards on the ground, scoring twice. Ricky Stevenson
finished with five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown and Zach Stewart
went 14-of-28 for 184 yards.
Odessa Permian - Amarillo
Permian's Tate Smith accounted for 354 total yards and four
touchdowns in the 46-14 shellacking of Amarillo High before a
homecoming crowd. Mojo took the opening drive down the field
and capped it off on a Robert Murry 1-yd dive for the first points.
Murry also had a 95-yard kickoff return. The Panthers enjoyed
a 26-0 halftime lead over the Sandies, but were far from being
content. Smith connected for touchdown passes of 44, 51 and 25
yards, and added a 16-yard touchdown run. Melvis Pride was the
recipient of the 44-yd TD pass from Smith and he too added another
score on a 36-yard interception return. The Permian defense
denied the Sandies on two goal-line stands and held the Amarillo
offense to just 39 yards rushing. The Panthers forced five AHS
turnovers.
Lubbock Monterey - Midland High
The Plainsmen jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Brandon Batch could
get the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the 38-24 Homecoming loss for
Midland High. Batch added his third touchdown run in the
fourth quarter, but Lubbock Monterey answered from two yards out.
Batch led Midland with a game-high 146 rushing yards on 18 carries.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-2.
Tyler Lee - Abilene High
After forcing an AHS punt on the game’s opening possession, Tyler
Lee's Marcus Jackson floated a pass to tight end Matt Johnston that
went for 67 yards, and Chris Ekwuruke ran it into the end zone on
the next play to give the Red Raiders an early 7-0 lead.
The eagles answered back in the second quarter on a touchdown and
Brandon Hill connected on a 31-yard field goal to put AHS ahead
10-7. In the second half, the Raider's Jackson connected on a
33-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Amie. The Eagles got back to within
one when Hill connected on his second field goal of the night, this
time from 18 yards away. The Red Raiders answered with a
25-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to fullback Jamaal Mitchell.
Tyler claimed a 21-13 win, dropping the Eagles’ record to 0-4.
Lubbock Coronado - Odessa High
Lubbock Coronado scored 21 third quarter points to hand Odessa High
its third straight loss. David Camacho opened the scoring with
a 22-yard run in the first quarter, then Coronado tied the game on a
42-yard pass from Colling Flathers to Steven Snyder to knot the
score at 7-7 at the half. The Mustangs exploded in the second
half. Flathers caught a touchdown pass and ran for another,
while Kholbye Walker returned a blocked punt 12 yards for a
touchdown to make the score 28-14. Camacho completed 15 of 33
passes for 289 yards with three interceptions.
Midland Lee - Lubbock High
The Rebels opened the game on a 23-yd TD
run by Jasper McKee and never looked back in the lopsided 42-7
homecoming victory. McKee scored again, this time from
31 yards out midway through the opening quarter. Corey Petro
added seven more on a 17-yard option for a 21-0 Rebel lead.
Lee added 21 more points in the second half as McKee, Desmond
Jackson and Daviian Roberts each scored touchdowns. Jackson scored
his first TD of the year on an 85-yard kickoff return to start the
third quarter, while Roberts scored on a 13-yard run. Lee
finished with 304 yards rushing, while McKee had 138 yards and three
touchdowns. Petro added another 102 rushing but completed just
2 of 7 passes for 24 yards and the two interceptions.
