well for the Bronchos as they forced a fumble on the Eagles’ second
play of the game, taking possession at the Abilene High 34-yard

Malcolm Hunt powered into the end zone on the next play. A bad snap
on the extra point ended as a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
The Bronchos were led by quarterback Camacho, who
rushed for 123 yards on 26 carries and passed for 173 yards and
three touchdowns on the night. |

FIRST BLOOD DOESN'T LAST IN
17-7 DEFEAT
The Bronchos came out and scored on their opening possession, after David
Camacho took a 6-yard option to paydirt. Unfortunately for Odessa
High, that would be the only points they would put on the scoreboard.
Amarillo Tascosa running back Anthony Scott found the end zone on a short
run to tie the score early in the second quarter. Jason Cunningham's
37-yard field goal would put the Rebels up 10-7 at the half. Scott
busted loose on a 26-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to extend
the Tascosa lead to 17-7. Scott would finish the game with 118 yards
on 24 carries for the Rebels. Camacho led the Bronchos with 47 yards
rushing and 60 yards through the air. |

FRENSHIP CONTROLS SECOND HALF

Bronchos on the board on a 10-yard touchdown run. The Tigers answered
back with a 35-yd TD pass to tie the score at 8-8. Camacho hit Daniel
Rivas on a 45-yard strike to reclaim the lead, but Frenship duplicated their
first score on another 35-yard pass to send the teams to the locker rooms
tied 15-15. In the second half, the Tigers scored a safety, two
touchdown passes from 33 and 30 yards, and hammered in the final nail on a
3-yd TD run in the fourth quarter.

SOCCER SEASON SET TO ROLL
The Bronchos last season became the first District 3-5A boys team to qualify
for the Region I-5A Tournament in three consecutive seasons, though they
also were the first 3-5A boys team to earn consecutive regional trips the
season before. It also doesn’t hurt that the Bronchos return goalkeeper
Alonso Jimenez, the reigning 3-5A MVP, for his senior season. Jimenez
allowed just nine goals in 12 district games as a junior. Sophomore
sweeper Steve Wiscombe was solid as a freshman starter and senior David
Torres is back to start at stopper, but both players are nursing injuries.
Uli Guillen, a sophomore, was 3-5A’s Newcomer of the Year last season and is
expected to make big impacts both in the midfield and at forward, while Josh
Hernandez also could see time at both positions. |

BASKETBALL CONTINUES DISTRICT
GAMES
Sophomore forward
Travis Nickens showed his full range, scoring 19 points to bring OHS within
one point of upsetting Midland High and turning District 3-5A upside down.
Odessa High’s fourth-quarter rally came up short, though, and Midland High
escaped with a 64-63 win over the Bronchos (2-1) at the OHS Fieldhouse.
Midland High took a 35-28 lead into the half. Teddy Chambers scored 17 of
his 19 points in the first half. After Justin Najera’s 3-pointer cut
the deficit to 46-41 with 2:34 left in the third. Nickens scored a
career-high 19 points to lead four Odessa High starters in double figures.
Uranga scored 15 points, while Guyton and Brent Sullivan had 12 points each. |

TURNOVERS
COST OHS PLAYOFFS
It's hard to win a game when the ball is on the turf. Nowhere was that
more evident than in the OHS - Midland High game. The Bronchos could
have handily beat Midland High with the absence of five fumbles, as the
Bronchos went in at the half behind 10-9 as a result. In the second
half, the Bulldogs put two more scores on the board for the 24-9 Odessa High
loss. The
loss eliminated OHS from the playoffs, but the Bronchos still finished with
a 7-3 record for the year.

REBELS
HAND BRONCHOS SECOND LOSS
The Broncho defense got a fair dose of McKee in the 35-7 loss in Ratliff

the second. The Midland Lee offense did most of their damage early,
taking a 28-7 halftime lead. McKee racked up 177 rushing yards on 28
carries, while OHS's Toby Golden led the Bronchos with 110 yards on 14
rushing attempts. A bright spot for OHS came on a

Toby Golden
was the leading ball carrier, rushing nine times for 106 yards and two

hope this new tradition continues to grow", said Leach just prior to the
lighting of the bonfire. There were several tables setup with Broncho
paraphernalia being offered by various school organizations. Barbeque and
other home cooked foods were available during the evening event. The
Bash was concluded with the bonfire, which featured team captains,

THE BETTER
HORSE ON COURSE
The Broncho Varsity and Junior Varsity proved to be the best horses against
the Andrews. On Thursday evening in Ratliff Stadium, the JV handed the
Mustangs a 27-7 deficit. The following night in Andrews, the Varsity
walked away winners of a 35-19 slugfest. Mason Munguia rushed for 137
yards and a touchdown and passed for another to Byron Monahan. Toby
Golden and Josh Shibler added scoring runs of 16 and 7 yards.
Defensively, Jamel Guyton intercepted two passes, returning one for a
touchdown, and kicker Alonso Jimenez connected on a 53-yard field goal. |

LATE
THREAT DENIED IN 28-21 VICTORY
The Big Spring Steers were driving toward the tying touchdown in the waning
moments of the game inside the 30-yard line with less than four minutes to
go. It was time for a stand and Odessa High’s safety Jamel Guyton
found one more jump. Forcing Big Spring into three straight incomplete
passes, Odessa High was able to take over on downs and then ran out the
clock for a 28-21 victory. Toby Golden racked up 110 yards on 13
carries. Chandler Goode had 126 yards on only three carries.
Mason Munguia finished 5-of-11 passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns. |

PLAINSMEN EDGE OHS IN SCRIMMAGE
While the
offense needs some more work, the defense looked solid against Lubbock
Monterey. The Plainsmen scored a late touchdown to defeat Odessa High,
7-5. In the scrimmage, Coach Phillips unveiled the “Gun Option”
offense, which gives Mason Munguia and Josh Shibler several options on every
play. It allows the quarterback to handoff to running backs Malcolm
Hunt, Toby Golden, and Kevin Moore. The second option is the throw to
receivers Byron Monahan, Chandler Goode, and Jamel Guyton. Against
Monterey the offense was hot or cold, but not consistent. The defense
looked pretty salty most of the night.

SEASON BEGINS FOR BRONCHOS
The first day of the 2005 season
began on Monday, August 8. The Broncho football team hope to brave the heat and
ready for the upcoming season. Look for Mason Munguia to throw to Jamil
Guyton
quite a bit, while Toby Golden and Kevin Moore churn out yardage from the
backfield.
Defensively, we expect Ricky Licon, Josh Baughman, and Shane Brady to do well
with Chandler Goode and Brent Sullivan in the secondary. |

RED-WHITE GAME ENDS IN TIE
After ending in a 28-28 tie, the OHS players wanted to
go into Sudden Death, but that was squelched by head coach Scott
Phillips. Josh Shibler scored twice on options to pace the White
team, while Mason Munguia orchestrated a 70-yard drive in the final 50
seconds for the Red team to tie the game with six seconds remaining.
The Bronchos came out in a four-wide set on nearly every play, moving
players in motion to unbalance the defensive set. Coach Phillips
unveiled an OHS added weapon in kicker Alonso Jimenez. A goalkeeper on
the boys soccer team, Jimenez put his foot into two field goals, from
47 and 49 yards. |
